The Lasting Power of Leadership Relationships

I just wrapped up a few incredible days at the American Public Power Association (APPA) National Conference, and I’m leaving with a full heart and a clear mind.

There’s something special about reconnecting with old friends—people who’ve walked alongside you in previous roles—and making new connections with those who share a passion for service and leadership. I had the privilege of helping to lead a pre-conference seminar, and it was deeply fulfilling to contribute ideas that might equip others in their leadership journey. It's always rewarding to give back to a community that has given so much to me.

One of my biggest takeaways? The relationships built through the years are more than professional—they’re personal. They transcend titles, roles, and seasons. I’ve moved into a new chapter in my career, but those connections remain strong. That kind of continuity doesn’t happen by accident—it’s the result of intentional investment over time.

If there’s a leadership lesson in all this, it’s this: don’t underestimate the value of relationships. Take time to nurture the ones you already have. And be open to the new connections waiting to be made—they might be more meaningful than you realize.
