It’s OK to Walk: A Lesson in Slowing Down

During my usual morning run today, I had an epiphany: it’s OK to walk.

For someone who’s been a runner for most of their life, this realization feels surprisingly profound. Running has always been my go-to metaphor for life—powering through, pushing limits, embracing the discomfort that leads to growth. Over the years, I’ve learned an important distinction: there’s discomfort you can push through and pain you shouldn’t ignore. That awareness has been critical in helping me stay healthy and keep moving.

But today’s revelation wasn’t just about running. It was about life, especially in this new season of pursuing my business goals.

I’m an idea person by nature, and the temptation to sprint ahead with every new idea is strong. Yet, what I’m discovering is that slowing the pace—giving myself permission to walk—brings clarity and focus. It’s not about giving up or settling for less; it’s about pacing myself to ensure I can go the distance.

This morning, I realized just how much I needed that permission. Walking isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s an intentional act of self-care. Whether it’s choosing to pursue one great idea at a time or recognizing when I need to rest and reset, walking has become a metaphor for living a healthier, happier life.

Sometimes, the most significant growth happens when we give ourselves the grace to slow down.

So, here’s a gentle reminder for you (and for me): It’s OK to walk.
